Professors appearance on televisions

The article states that appearing on television shows benefits not only the professor himself but also the university and the public. It provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that it may not be really beneficial and refutes each of the authors' reasons.

First, the reading says that the professors who appear on television acquire a reputation in their academic fields from various teachers and researchers across the world. However, the professor refutes this point by explaining that the reputation that the professor gets tends to be of someone who likes to entertain people and is not a true scholar in his field. She further says that due to this the professors are not invited in conferences and academic discussions more often.

Second, the author posits that the university is also benefitted when their faculty member appears on the television. It helps to promote positive publicity. The professor opposes this point by saying that it eats up a lot in the professors' time to get ready for the show. She adds to this by saying that, students get less time with the professor and also it affects the professors' research work.

Third, the reading states that the general public also gains from television appearances as they get a chance to learn and listen to the views of the professor himself. On the contrary, the professor explains that though the professor does have knowledge but the television shows do not give entire details of his study or research work. We also know that, since no one would like to listen to compelling science theories and developments during their supper at home, the television only explains the topics of the professors' field. This is as good as listening to some news reporter, thus the general public does not gain much information and knowledge by watching the television shows.
