Essay topics:

reading passage puts forward the claim that Robert E. Peary had in fact reach the North Pole. However, the professor does not concur with it and maintains that there is no convincing evidence to prove this idea. He uses three points to support his opinion.

Initially, the professor questions the report provided by the National Geographic Society. According to the reading passage, the committee advocates that Peary had indeed reached the North Pole after examine his records and equipment. Differing from the statement, the professor casts doubt on it. He points out, this investigation is not objective, for the committee is led by a Peary's close friend who sponsored him during his adventure. What's more, the investigation only last two days, which must not be taken seriously. In this situation, the result from this investigation is full of prejudice and not worth trusting.

Moreover, the author of the reading passage cites an expedition to support his claim. Using the identical kind of dogsled, another explorer Tom Avery reached the North Pole within 37 days, which prove that Peary could manage this task as well. Nevertheless, the professor points out 2 differences. First, Tom carried less weight than Peary. All his food was provided by airplanes during his trip. Second,
Tom’s trip was under much more favorable weather conditions than what Peary experienced.

Finally, as the reading passage uses Peary's photographs as evidence, the professor argues that it does not prove anything. He admits that although we can analyze the shadow in the photos, it requires to be extremely precise. But the photos of Peary do not reach this standard. What's more, these pictures are becoming faded and discolored, we cannot use modern techniques to acquire accurate results. This is why this evidence is not trustworthy.
