A recent study reveals that people especially young people are reading far less literature—novels, plays, and poems—than they used to. This is troubling because the trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public, for culture in general, and for

The article states that people are reading far less literature than before and this has unfortunate effects and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that it is true that people reading fewer poems and novels but they read other books and pay attention to another medium as well as literature and she refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading states that While there has been a decline in book reading generally, the decline has been especially sharp for literature. This is unfortunate because nothing else provides the intellectual stimulation that literature does. The professor refutes this point by stating that people read other books such as science writing or history and politics book which doesn't mean that these books don't stimulate the imagination.

Second, the article claims that there are other problems with not reading the literature such as something that people read and watch instead. The author states that many people are now more likely to turn on the television, watch a music video, or read a Web page which these have lowered level of culture in general. However, the professor contends that the culture is changed and it includes movies and songs which improve the level of culture.

Third, the reading avers that publishers do less invest and support fewer serious writers. The lecture opposes this point by saying that it is true that they do less support literature now but it's not the reader's fault and it's authors fault. She also states that they write something that is hard to understand.
