Some scientists believe that they use stars to navigate themselves, the author in the reading passage is one of them. While, another group of researchers refutes this opinion, as the professor in the lecture did, and he supports his idea with many evidence.
First of all, the speaker contends that the intelligence level is not important for animals to use stars in navigation. Even though, dogs have an average level of intelligence but they can use stars in navigation. By this point, the professor argues the first point in the text about the connection between the cognitive development in humpback whales and their ability to use stars.
Second, regarding humpback whales ability to maintain swimming in a straight line during their migration, and how that support using stars theory, as the author assumes. The professor claims that may logically support the idea of using the magnetic field of earth instead. As humpback whales have a part in their brain named bio magnetied, it is very sensitive to any changes in magnetic field. Therefore, it will be more acceptable to assume the usage of the magnetic field in navigation rather than stars approach.
Finally, about the spy-hooping, the lecture asserts that it is not necessary that humpback whales use it to see the stars, especially, they do that at day time when there are no stars in the sky. Furthermore, a lot of other animals use this technic to look for food as the shark. In turn, humpback whales may do that for another purpose, not for navigation. Thus, the professor knocks down the third point that has raised by the reading.
In sum, the professor successfully refutes each point in the text and support his idea with many arguments.
