reducing the salt level in the lakes

Essay topics:

reducing the salt level in the lakes

In this case of materials the text and the lecture offers two opposing views on the possibility of reducing the salt level in The Salton Sea in USA by using the mentioned suggestions. With this in mind, the lecture casts doubt on this opinion stating that such solution is useful to decrease the level of salt in the lake's water. The lecture, in the contrary, categorically refutes all the episodes of the argument mentioned in the passage, believing that these proposals are not realistic and practical.

First, the passage asserts that one solution is desalination which means removal of the salt directly by pumping the water into the facilities. After process of evaporation, the remains of salt will depart from it. In contrary, the speaker counters this view by stating that it can definitely reduce the level of the salt but the evaporated water through pumps mix with other solid materials. Furthermore, she states that these materials, like selenium are sometimes toxic and so dangerous to people's health if they drink or breathe them.

Moreover, the author claims that one other possible solution is to pump the ocean water in to the lake and as it is 20 percent less solid it can diminush the salinity. However, the speaker challenges this opinion by stating that this advanced task demand construction a lot of canals that are obviously very expensive. Additionally, she explains that the shoreline is about 1 km and the government does not enough resources to afford constructing such huge facilities.

Finally, the reading holds the view that one other suggestion is to build walls in different parts of the lake. Consequently, it is possible to control the salinity in the main parts of the lake and left the other parts salty. On the other hand, the professor repudiates this idea, mentioning that this opinion cannot work for a long time. Further, she explains that this lake is located in a region subjected to frequent geological activities. She continues that these activities like earthquake can easily damage the walls and they will finally collapse and the water in main parts mix back in salty water of other parts.
