Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet. Th

In this set of materials, the reading and the listening are both discussing a portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet wherein the reading states that the painting was not done by the Dutch master and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that the painting was done by Rembrandt and refutes each of the author's points.
First of all, the author of the reading claims that the woman’s outfit is inconsistent, as it pairs a servant’s cap with a luxurious coat and fur collar. She or He believes that Rembrandt would not have made such a mistake, as he paid very careful attention to detail. The professor refutes this point by saying that the women’s fur collar was added to the painting by another artist at a later date. Furthermore, he points out that this was likely done to increase the value of the painting.
Secondly, the author states that the depiction of light and shadow in the portrait is poorly done. She or he argues that Rembrandt would have made the mistakes which are seen in this particular painting. However, the professor states that when the aforementioned fur collar is removed, no mistakes with light and shadow remain. He puts forth the idea that the original version of the painting is up to Rembrandt’s usual standards.
Finally, the author mentions that the portrait was painted on a series of panels which were glued together. She or He notes that while Rembrandt often painted on wood panels, there is no evidence that he ever used panels that were glued together in such a fashion. The professor opposes this point by explaining that the wood panel was expanded many years after the painting was originally done. he elaborates on this by mentioning that this is evidence that the painting was originally completed in just a single panel like other works by Rembrandt.
In conclusion, the three points that made in the lecture contrast with the reading. The first, second and third points in the lecture demonstrate that the painting was not done by Dutch master is in doubt.
