Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth century Dutch painters However there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him One such painting is known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet The pa

The reading and lecture are both about a painting made by famous Dutch painter Rembrandt. The author of the reading states that there have been several problem with the painting that suggests it was not the work of the artist whereas, the lecturer later provides information that a thorough examination by a panel of researcher proves that painting was indeed made by the artist.
Preeminently, according to the reading there were inconsistency regarding the dressing of the women in the portrait. The author starts by explaining how the white linen cap and luxurious fur creates ambiguity regarding the status. He points out that an artist like Rembrandt, who is known for meticulous work would never be guilty of this. However, the lecturer disputes this point. She claims that the fur was colored over the top of the original painting hundred years later. She points out this might have been done to increase it's value.
By the same token, the reading states that the painting lacked the light and shadow combination. The author argues that the dark fur collar absorbs light rather than reflecting it. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. She asserts that after analyzing the original color of fur was light which provided the perfect combination for light and shadow.
In winding up, the reading contends that the painting was made on several pieces of wood glued together. It was known that the artist usually used a single piece of wood. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that additional piece of wood was glued to the original painting to make it look grand and valuable.
