Scientists are considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the coming decades. Although there have been successful manned missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Mars is 150 times further away from Earth than the Moon is. Thus the project of sending humans to Mars would require solving an array of problems the Moon missions did not have to face.

The reading passage and the lecture are both about the ability to send a human to Mars in the coming decades. The article states that the project of sending astronauts to Mars is will be faced with new problems which the moon missions did not have to face. However, the professor opposes this point by mentioning three theories.
To begin with, the author states that since round-trip to mars and take back is likely more than two years, whereas, a trip to the moon takes a shorter time like a few days and bringing enough supplies of food, water, and oxygen but the space vehicles have limited cargo capacity so they just can put a specific amount of food, water and oxygen so it is not enough for two years. The lecturer argues this point by saying that they can use hydroponics, a technique for growing plants with their roots in water instead of soil; they can cultivate food crops in spacecraft. Moreover, since all plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, astronauts will have fresh air to breathe.
Secondly, the author states that the zero-gravity environment has many harmful impacts on the human body, like decreased muscle mass and lower bone density. Throughout two year mission, the effects would be severe and would make humans face grave medical problems. the professor, however, rebuts this by saying that the astronauts can use several techniques for solving this problem such as regular exercise and taking vitamins and minerals. Therefore, astronauts are experts dealing with zero gravity and there is no need to worry about them.
Finally, the article mentions that astronauts on a mission to Mars would be exposed to dangerous levels of space radiation which are mostly coming from the sun. in contrast the professor mentions that the spaceship would be equipped with a special instrument to control the radiation. Moreover, the device could also shield against radiation. When astronauts meet the period of a large amount of radiation, they could hide behind the shielded areas and come out when the danger has passed.
