Scientists are considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the coming decades. Although there have been successful manned missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Mars is 150 times further away from Earth than the Moon is. Thus the projec

The lecturer argues against the three challenges mentioned in the reading to make a trip to Mars feasible. She asserts that these challenges can be solved.

First, the author argues that a spaceship cannot hold large amount of food sufficient for two years because of its weight. The lecturer refutes this point by stating that astronauts can grow hydroponic plants. He contends that hydroponic plants has several advantages, they can provide food, recycle water, and provide oxygen. Therefore, the space ship does not need to carry excessive amount of food.

Secondly, according to the test zero gravity of spaceship has negative effect on astronauts because it causes muscle atrophy. Again the lecturer finds this idea debatable. He bolsters his opinion by stating that it is true that zero gravity may cause harmful effect on astronaut's body, but that is only if they do not exercise and take food supplements. The lecturer contends that by regular exercise astronauts can maintain a healthy life style.

Finally, the lecturer contradicts the author claims that radiation can harm astronauts because of the damaging effect it causes on their skin. The lecture acknowledges the author's concerns. However, he states that astronauts are now able to detect when the sun is mostly active, and be protected by a small shield room inside the spaceship. Interestingly, this small room does not weight as much as a shield on the whole spaceship
