TPO 33: CARVED STONE BALLSReading:Carved stone balls are a curious type of artifact found at a number of locations in Scotland. They date from the late Neolithic period, around 4,000 years ago. They are round in shape; they were carved from several types

The lecturer disputes the author's suggested theory that the carved stones ball discovered in Scotland served as weapons during the Neolithic period. He provides several reasons to cast doubt about these claims.

First, according to the text the carved stones ball served as weapons for fighting and hunting. The lecturer find this idea debatable. He asserts that for the carved stones ball to serve this purpose, they should have some tearing and wearings. However, non of the artifacts discovered have any such signs.

Second, the author argues that the carved stones ball may have been used for weighing and measuring purposes because all pieces were similar in size. The lecturer refutes this point by stating that it is true that all pieces have similar size. However, they also have different weights because they are made of different material. He contends that, theoretically speaking, carved stone ball with different weights cannot be used to measure weights.

Finally, the lecturer contradicts the fallacy that carved stones balls were used to mark the social status of people. He contends that artifacts that serve this purpose should have magnificent designs. However, the discovered pieces are simple in designs. Thus, it is unlikely that they serve to show the social status. Moreover, non of the artifacts discovered were buried in caves with the owners which exclude the possibility that they serve this purpose.
