sea cows' extinction

Essay topics:

sea cows' extinction

The material discusses the reasons of Steller's sea cows' extinction. While the reading looks at the topic from one perspective, the listening challenges certain points outlined in the reading passage.

First, the reading claims that Siberian people overhunted sea cows. On the contrary, the listening challenges this and states that sea cows were massive creatures, one of them was nine-meter-long and ten tons weight, so it could feed a village of Siberian for a month, in addition to that, the Siberian population were not very large; thus, they did not need to hunt a lot of them and cause their extinction.

Second, the author mentions that ecosystem fluctuation declined kelp, which was sea cows' main source of food. In contrast, the lecturer opposes this and explains that if there were ecosystems disturbances on 1768, it should decline other marines, such as whales; however, there is no report of any decline of whales at the same time; hence, kelp should grow fine and sea cows did not have any food shortage.

Third, the author posits that the European fur traders were responsible for the extinction. Conversely, the professor contradicts this and states that when the European traders arrived, the sea cows populations was already quite small, the populations were declined 100 of years before 1700, so there was something that happened long before the European arrival and caused the extinction.
