the sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast rapidly declining

Essay topics:

the sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast rapidly declining

In this set of materials, the reading passages explains a theory based on ocean’s polution to give a reason why the number of sea otter’s is decreasing. The listening passage, casts doubts about that theory using three important explanations.

First, while the reading passage presents an explanation about a possibility of oil or chemical intoxication, the professor has some concerns about it. when scientists found some died sea otters, none of them had signals that could express an intoxication process. Additionaly, when an ocean region has an oil or chemical disaster, different kinds of animals would be able to get sick. In contrast, just sea otters declined in areas closer to Alaska.

Secondly, in the listening passage the professor concerns again about the polution theory. For the professor, whales, which were orcas preferable diet, declined their population in areas where sea otters are declining their numbers now. this condition explains that orcas have changed their diets and are hunting smaller sea mammals, such as sea otters, sea lions, or seals.

Third, the lecture argues about the areas where sea otters are decreasing their population. For the professor, in areas where orcas have problems to access, like shallow or rock areas, scientists are seeing a declining on sea otters’ numbers. Consequently, it can explain that polution is not the main reason because oil or chemicals could access these parts of the ocean as well.
