However, in addition to good information, the media contain rumors, misinformation, and politically motivated variations on the truth. The most effective remedy for misinformation is fact checking. If the information people have is incorrect, the corrected facts will have a better understanding of the issues.
When people have all of the available information, they are able to develop intelligent, informed opinions about issues. People base their opinions on facts, and the more information they have, the more informed their opinions will be. Listening to opposing opinions is an important component of being informed. Therefore, political debate will benefit society by ensuring that citizens understand all sides of an issue.
Accurate information is necessary for solving the problems societies face. When people feel threatened, they will search for the truth. Their natural instinct is to seek information that will help them to make decisions about potential solutions to problems. They will listen to the opinions of experts and look to their elected officials for leadership. When the people are well informed, everyone will benefit: the people, the leaders, and the society as a whole.
In the set of materials, the reading passage states that higher education solves most of the problems in our society. However, the professor in the lecture refutes the author’s points and explains why higher education is not effective in solving the problems.
Firstly, according to the reading passage, when people have more knowledge and information about a fact or a problem, they can know the truth or the issue; therefore, they can reject misinformation and rumors. In contrast, the professor claims that facts do not have an effect on people’s choice. Knowing facts is not curing the misinformation or the issue because people do not change their opinion by knowing more facts. News and print media spread new facts to change the opinion of people, but unfortunately, this method is not effective.
Secondly, the reading asserts that when people have more knowledge and information, they can understand both the positive and negative opinions, and clarify all sides of the issues. Quite the opposite, the professor indicates that people vote for their beliefs rather than facts. Sometimes, they twist the facts to fit their beliefs. According to the professor, individuals reject any new information if it does not fit their beliefs. In some cases, even the information is bad and hazardous, they makes it fit with their beliefs in order to accept it.
Thirdly, the reading passage posits that threatened persons will search for the truth, due to their natural instinct. On the other hand, the professor mentions that people will not listen to new information when they are threatened. Using this fact, some politicians try to manipulate people and change people’s opinion. For instance, when people fear, they do not accept the opposite viewpoints about a candidate in an election or discussion. As the professor said, it is easier to control people when they are in a state of fear.
