Soon technology will provide smart cars that virtually drives themselves. A computer in the car determines the speed and route to the desired destination. The computer is in continuous contact with a global positioning system and other technologies that w

The article and lecture debate over advantages and disadvantages of smart car.The article states that smart cars ensure safe, faster and economical driving. However the professor casts doubts over these benifits and refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, reading claims that smart cars ensure safe driving and they protect lives by thwrting accdidents. The professor refutes this point by saying that after all even the advanced devices often fail to carry out their task. Since, large number of smart cars are moving together and they are tightly packed accidents rate will culminate and its effect will be more worse.

Second, the article posits that with increased usage of smart cars traffic problems will vanish and individuals will be greatly benifited by the high speed feature of smart car. However the professor says according to history, whenever some convinience such as smart cars are introduced more people tend to drive these cars. As a result, with rise in number of cars on the road, traffic conjection will emerge. Hence, high speet feature of car can't be utilized and commute hours will not be reduced.

Third, the reading says that maintenance cost of driving smart cars would be less. The professor opposes this point by explaining that equipment used in smart cars are costlier than conventional cars. Global Positioning System used to direct the car and sensor to detect how far is the next car are very expensive. In addition to this repair of the damaged part is costly as well. So, if we combine these expenses, it will be far greater than the money that could be spent on maintenance of conventional cars.
