Standardized testing

Essay topics:

Standardized testing

The article states that standardized test ensure that students receive the best education possible and supports this system by providing 3 reasons. The speaker says that these tests are no tool to help improve education of the students and refutes with each of the article’s reasons.

Firstly, the article states that these tests set a strong standard because they are given statewide and nationwide. The speaker refutes this point by explaining that forcing these tests pushes teachers to teach the same material and restricts their freedom in educating their students, she continues to argue that these tests tell teachers what to teach and takes the power away from them to teach each of their students accordingly.

Secondly the article avers that with these exams, schools become more accountable for the success of their students. The speaker however disagrees with this statement by telling us that this results in the punishment of the students who act poorly in the tests, and also that these tests are to determine the funding for schools and the better the students perform the more funding the school receives and thus, for those schools which are in rough neighborhoods and don’t perform as well, this has a negative effect on their funding.

Finally, the article asserts that the results of these exams can provide help to those students who need it most. The lecturer opposes to this notion by saying that if the students don’t pass the exams there is no help for them, and that these tests are given to more than 100 different schools and more than 1000 different students to determine their reaction, and what if some students react poorly under pressure or what if they are ill?
