Essay topics:

Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made in the reading passage.

The reading passage tells us that use the box-shape device surrounding the young tree to fight desertification is prone to failure. The lecturer responds by saying that these reasons are not convincing at all, since this proposal is worthwhile and practical.

The first reason that the critic proposes is the problem of budget, for the high cost of each device. If we want to solve the problem of desertification, there will need to grow millions of trees, which is too expensive to conduct. However, The professor points out that the device can be reused once the young tree grows up, so the cost will not be so high, and thus unrealistic to reach

The condition of the residents living in these areas is the second reason that represented by the critic. These devices need people to take care of them, but it is hard to require people to do that for the harsh condition that they encounter. The professor agrees that the it is true that the devices need residents to maintain, but she thinks there are still several possible reward to motivate them. For example, the device can help them collect water, grow crops and build fire wood forest.

The final reason made by the critics says that the device's ability is limited because it can only be operated for the young tree is not supported at all, according to the professor. This statement ignores that when the tree become bigger, it can survive well on its own, which is represented by the empirical data.
