Essay topics:

summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.

According to the passage, many people do not accept this idea that bees have lived on Earth for approximately 200 million years. The lecture, however, doubts this view by three strong views.
First, the passage explains that there are not any real fossils of bees that indicate the presence of bees on the earth 200 million years ago. This idea is refuted by the lecture, which claims that although we have no fossils of bees, it does not mean that bees did not exist in that time. A specific material (tree resin) is essential for fossilizing the bees. These trees were very rare in that period of time. Hence, the lack of fossils does not indicate the lack of bees.
Second, the passage thinks that because there were no flowering plants that bees fed on them, there were not any bees. The lecture, in contrast, disagrees with this belief, suggesting that the bees that lived in that period fed on nonflowering plants. Bees adopted themselves after evolving the plants.
Third, the author of the passage writes that the fossilized structures are not similar to today's nest of bees. The lecture, on the contrary, states that although the fossilized structures do not have caps like modern bees' nest, the chemical evidence shows that they have some waterproof material that modern bees used for building nests. It proved that bees made the chambers.
