TOEFL integrated writing: Dutch painter Rembrandt

The text and the recording are about a painting of Rembrandt and if this painting belongs to him.

First, the text affirms that there are some strange things in the woman's clothes. She is using a white linen cap and a luxurious fur collar, which doesn't make sense because white linen caps were used by servants, but a servant never would have money to buy an expensive collar like this. However, the recording notes that the collar wasn't part of the painting, it was added a long time after Rembrandt end it. Someone was trying to increase the value of this art.

Secondly, the author states that the painting's light and shadow don't fit together. The woman's face wouldn't be illuminated by the light reflected by the collar because it is black, and an artist that was a master of light and shadow would never make a mistake like this. Therefore, the lecturer claims that this collar was a simple light one, so the face would be illuminated by the light reflected, rebutting the argument of the text.

Thirdly, the reading points out that the panel of the painting is made of wood pieces glued together. Rembrandt never used this kind of panel, hence this painting doesn't belong to him. However, the listening rebuts this idea affirming that the panel was one entire piece, and made of the same wood of the other Rembrandt painting's panels. Some people in the past tried to make the painting more expensive did that.

In conclusion, it is easy to see that the lecturer and the author have conflicting ideas. One writing that the painting doesn't belong to Rembrandt and the other saying that it belongs.
