TOEFL T P O 01 - Integrated Writing Task
In the reading section, the author contends that shortened workweek would benefit companies, the country as a whole, and individual employees who decided to take the option. However, in the listening part, the professor respectively casts doubt on all assertions discussed in the passage by providing three specific points as supports.
In the first place, the writer makes the point that the option of working a four-day workweek would increase company profits because employees would work more efficiently, and as a result, they would make fewer costly mistake. By contrast, in accordance with the speaker, this view does not hold water. He argues that, four-day workweek will force companies to spend more money on training and medical benefits. Also, more workers require more office space and more computers which reduce the company profits.
Furthermore, it is proposed in the reading materials that shortened workweek would decrease the overall unemployment rate. this is because employees workload whould have to be shifted to others. contrary to this belief, the lecturer refutes this viewpoint and maintain that hiring new worker is costly and companies have other choices. they might choose as their employees to work over time to make up difference. Worse, they might raise their expectation and start to expect four-day workers can do same amount of work they used to do in five days. If this happens, no additional job will be created and current jobs will be unpleasant.
at last, the passage claims that this option is better for individuals because they have more free time which can improve their quality of lives. On the other hand, the professor demonstrates a different view. Accourding to him, shortened workweek presents some risks and can reduce job stability. In addition, four-day employees are more likely to lose their job during an economic downturn because companies prefer five-day employees for their management positions to ensure a continues coverage for entire workweek.
