TOEFL T P O 27 Integrated Writing Task

The article and the lecture are both deal with the cause of little ice age. While the author of the article thinks that there are three specific reasons for the cooling climate earlier, lecturer opposes the author's claims. In his opinion, these reasons are outdated.

First, the author of the reading claims that because of disrupting of ocean currents, the climate shows warming effects that direct glaciers' melting. Furthermore, it is stated in the article that these melted glaciers move to the Gulf Stream, which cause the little ice age. In contrast, the lecturer argues that Gulf Stream theory only explains partially the cause. Additionally, he maintains that the cooling effect only happens in Northern part, but it cannot explain the Southern part.

Second, the author mentions that volcanic eruption emits large amount of dust. On top of that, he adds that by releasing dusts and sulfur gas, the hidden sunlight leads to decrease in temperature. However, the lecturer calls his argument into question by saying that volcanic eruption makes visual effect. Further, he remarks that during that period, no one reports about signs of volcano eruption such as colorful sunset and brown snow.

Finally, the writer asserts that decline of significant human population is one cause of the cold climate. In addition to that, it is mentioned in the article that overgrown trees in the area where once used as agricultural purposes leads to reduce in greenhouse effect which keeps Earth's atmosphere warm. As opposed to the author, the lecturer holds that there was no enough time for causing the little ice age by dissolving the problem. He highlights that the trees are unable to grow in such a short period of time.
