Torreya taxifoha
The reading passage states that the torreya trees in north Forida are facing the danger of extinction and it suggests some ideas to save them. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubts on the points made in the reading and find them unsatisfactory.
First, considering the article, an option is to reproduce torreya in the same location it was before which is microclimate. In cotrast, the professor in the lecture contradits the idea and further explains that microclimate in the northern part of Florida has been recently changed due to global warming and drained plants. Therefore, it will be no longer suitable for torreya trees to live there.
Second, the reading puts forward the idea to relocate these trees to a new environment, cooler and seem to be more suitable for them. On the contrary, the professor in the lecture exemplifies the consequences of a similar decision happened before to Black Locas tree. this new tree killed other plants living in new envirnment which many of them had been in the danger of distinction. So the results of this idea are unpredictable and uncontrolable.
Third, reading passage claimes that torreya trees can be preserved in research centers where it is easier to be protected and examined. On the other hand, the speaker finds this idea not infeasible. She adds that the population of trees should be far more than the capacity of research centers in order to survive possible diseases. A large diversity of genes between trees is necessary to help them resist diseases.
