Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including kings and writers, his memoir has become a valuable historical source about European society in the eighteenth century. However, some critics have raised doubts about the accuracy of the memoir. They claim that the Chevalier distorted or invented many events in the memoir to make his life seem more exciting and glamorous than it really was.
The reading and lecture are both about Chevalier de Seingalt who was very popular for writing a memoir of his life and adventures. The author of the reading feels that the reliability of the memoir is ambiguous and vague. The lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He is on the opinion that no memoir is possibly correct but it is a reliable historical source.
To begin with, the author argues that Chevalie was lived in Switzerland and very riched and used vast money for gambling. The author states that if he was riched then why he needs to lean money from a Swiss merchant. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that normally peoples is required time to convert the property to the money. He also mentions that it is possible he needs the money immediately and that's why he needs to borrow it.
Secondly, the writer suggests that the conversation happened between Chevalie and the Vottaire possibly did not capture accurately. Additionally, may be some exact phrases is missing the conversation. However, the lecturer rebuts this by mentioning that Chevalie wrote everything in the memoir he remembered. Also, the witness confirmed that he always took note of any conversation.
Thirdly, the author posits that Chevalie escaped from the prison from the ceiling by making a hollow space. He also claims that may be some well-connected political friends helped him for this incident to make the reading interesting. In contrast, the lecturer position is that after escaping from the prision the ceiling needs to repair. He also noted that some proper evidence proved the incident correct if he wants to make the reading interesting why the jailer needs to repair the ceiling.
