TPO-07 - Integrated Writing Task In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recyclin

The reading and the lecture discuss the wood eco-certification which has a friendly impact on the environment, and also worldwide companies have been adopting it. The author believes that the United States is not doing the same because it is not beneficial for the country’s companies. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. He considers that there are good reasons somewhat US’s companies would eventually get this certification.

First, the author comes up with the idea that American consumers are overwhelmed and do not rely too much on advertising, as a result, they would not be interested in an eco-certification label. However, the lecturer argues that consumers in the US do treat business’ advertising in the same way, for example, if independent agencies had this certification, their consumers would be attracted.

Second, the author states that uncertified wood will be cheaper than the eco-certified because business should spend money to be examined by a certification agency, so their products will suffer an increase in the price. Therefore, people will not be encouraged to buy the products. The professor rebuts this argument by pointing out that the consumers take care about the price and also the product itself, for this reason, as the price will not change more than 5% consumers will be more convinced by certified products than uncertified ones.

Finally, the author contends that the certification will not be successful because the US does not market products internationally, and most of the business movement inside of US, so there is no need to certify the products as international companies. The professor, on the other hand, posits that the United States could go into a foreign competition if they had eco-certification. And another advantage that the lecturer mentions is that the US market could be benefited from the international slow capture offering wood rather than keep it domesticated.
