TPO-07 - Integrated Writing Task In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recyclin

The reading passage states that eco-certification to American wood companies might not be a benefit to either the public or to the companies. The passage gives three supporting reasons. However, the professor in the lecture takes the positive side of eco-certification and asserts that it is certainly a benefit to the companies and the general public.

Firstly, the reading passage states that advertising the eco-certified products might not lure many customers. He says America is already prone to over advertising. Due to this, the citizens show a minimal amount of interest to the advertisements and hence they cannot trust the eco-certified products. In contrast, the professor argues that the public doesn't treat all the advertisements in the same manner. He says that advertising for independent certifications and own products is not the same in public's view. EcologIical minded Americans might react fairly to the eco-certified wood products advertisements by independent agencies which have an international reputation for trustworthiness.

Secondly, the reading passage states the wood products might become expensive due to eco-certification. Since the company has to bear the cost for the process of certification, this cost will be imposed upon the customers who want to buy those products. If the prices go high, people do not prefer these and they will opt for low price non-certified wood. Hence companies prefer to sell uncertified wood at lower prices rather than the high price of eco-certified wood. However, the professor asserts that people are not concerned about the price if the competing products price difference is less than 5 percent, which is the case of eco-certified products. In addition, he says that Americans are concerned about protecting and conserving the environment than money, thus they go for buying eco-certified products.

Thirdly, the reading passage says that eco-certification will be useful only if the products are marketed abroad. There is no sense in marketing eco-certified products within the country. On the contrary, the professor says that through eco-certification, the American companies can give a tough competition to the foreign companies. If the market of American companies become slow in capturing the local customers, then foreign companies might enter into the country by offering the products which American companies do not.

To conclude, the reading passage says that it is not worthy for wood companies to go for eco-certification because they neither attract customers nor gets profit. On the contrary, the professor emphasizes without eco-certification labels, foreign companies can enter and lure the Americal customers. Hence American companies should go for eco-certification products which can attract customers because of the label, their concern to a green environment.
