The reading and the lecture are both about the accuracy of Chevalier's memoir, which is a valuable historical source about European society in eigthteen century. The reading casts doubts on the accuracy of the memoir. The lecturer refutes all the notions made by the author of the reading. She believes that the memoir is accurate.

To begin with, the author raises a question about the wealthiness of Chevalier. He argues that if Chevalier had trully possessed a lots of money, he would not have to borrow money from the bank as many evidences suggested. The professor rebutes this point. She says that the Chevalier have to made a loan while waiting for other assets of himself are being sold.

Secondly, the author mentions the correctness of records of conversation between Chevalier and Voltaire. He thinks that those records of conversations are written down many years after the conversation occurred, and question about the accuracy of its. The lecturer argues this point made by the author. She says that Chevalier had kept many notes after each conversation with Voltaire and use them as references when he wrote them down in his memoir.

Finally, the reading casts doubt on the claims in Chevalier's memoir about the escapre from prison in Venice. He thinks that Chevalier just made that story up to add excitement to his story. The lecturer, in the other hand, believes that Chevalier's memoir is correct. She says that Chevalier's cellmates are more powerful than him and could not even brided the jailer to get out of prison. Furthermore, evident about the ceilling of the prison covered up after Chevalier had already gotten out confirm the truthfullness of his memoir.
