Integrated Task : Dowsing

The reading and the lecture are both about dowsing, which is a acient method of
finding hidden things. The author believes that dowsing, until this day, still have
practical use in many fields, not only to find underground water but also for locating
treasure, oil and gold. The lecturer cast doubt on the claims made by the author. She
is the opinion that dowsing was against the basic law of physic and did not have the
real impact.
To begin with, the author states that by using the forked stick and concentrate in
feeling the vibration of the stick, a dowsing specialist can somehow locate the energy
emmitted by the underground water and pinpoint its location. This point is argue by
the professor. She thinks that this phenomenon is against the basic law of physic.
Futhermore, she points out experiement conducted by researcher using very sensitive
detection device can not sense or detect any signal from the object. She solidifies her
statement by mention about the sensitivity of the detection device that could received
the signal even from outer space. By given out factual evidences, the professor
effectively rebuts the point made in the reading passage.
Secondly, the author believes that dowsing method nowadays still gain it's popularity
in many fields. He thinks that dowsing specialist still have their place in the market.
The professor once again repel this notion. She mentions about strictly control
epxeriment in which all of the variances are fixed, the chance of normal people in
finding underground water is as same as dowsing specialist. By introduce this strictly
control experiment, she rule out the possibility of dowsing method and consider its
effect are merely the hunch of the specialist whom perform the practice.
In conclusion, the lecturer successfully refutes the claims made by the author. She is
the opinion that dowsing method is impractical base on its nonsense in physic law and
depend heavily on the feeling of the one who perform the practice.
