TPO 08- Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including kings and writers, his memoir has become a valuable historical source about European society in the eighteenth century. However, some critics have raised doubts about the accuracy of the memoir. They claim that the Chevalier distorted or invented many events in the memoir to make his life seem more exciting and glamorous than it really was.

The reading and lecture are both about the memoirs of Chevalier de Seingalt. The author of the reading believes that information and details about the memoirs are distorted to make his life glamorous and fun. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that the arguments are inaccurate compared to facts.

First of all, the author points out that Chevalier was a wealthy person. The author notes that he spends his money on gambling and parties, but he borrows money from Swiss merchants. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that Chevalier spends huge amount of money on party and he is wealthy. Furthermore, she elaborates on this by mentioning that he has to borrow money from a merchant because money at that time would not be readily available, so first he must sell his assets to merchants in order to convert it into money before waiting his money to arrive.

Secondly, the author contends that in his memoirs his conversation with Voltaire is doubtful. The article establishes that the memoir cannot be accurate because the memoir was written years before the conversation has happened. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that each night right after the conversation between Voltaire and Chevalier, he wrote everything he remembered in their conversation. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that there are witnesses to account for Chevalier's claims that he regularly has conversation with Voltaire.

Finally, the author states that his escape to the Venetian prison is also questionable. The article denotes that he bribed the guards to free him in the prison. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that he has other inmates who are more powerful and rich than him and did not escaped prison. She puts forth the idea that there are old document to support that he escaped the prison by himself and right after his escape the ceiling on his prison room was repaired because it was broken.
