First, the Readings presents the argument that combustion engines rely on Petroleum-base fuels, which are not renewable and will eventually deplete from earth. Moreover, the article mentions that Fuel-cell engines use hydrogen, which is presented even in water and is highly renewable. Meanwhile, the lecturer states that even if hydrogen is very common in various substances, it has to be in a pure presentation in order to be used as fuel. Besides that, the hydrogen must be kept at a very low temperature, all this process is very expensive and makes hydrogen fuel inaccessible.
Second, the author of the passage posits that the by-products of Petroleum-base fuels are very environment-polluting, this poses an environmental problem that would be solved with Fuel-cells engines. The professor in the lecture rebuts this argument, he says that creating hydrogen in a usable state takes too much energy that would come from burning coal or petroleum. Thus, even if the engines do not contaminate, creating the fuel will, defeating the purpose of the engine.
Finally, The article claims that soon the price of the fuel-cell engine will be economically competitive. The author elaborates on this by explaining that this type of engine is twice as efficient as a traditional one, so the consumer will expend only the half on fuel. The professor challenges this claim. He explains that even if this engine is much more fuel-saving, it is made of very expensive components, like platinum. furthermore, it is mentioned that efforts to make cheaper engines without said component have failed.
