TPO-18 - Integrated Writing Task In the 1950s Torreya taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya wi

Both the passage and the lecture discuss the decline of the Torreya Taxifoha, which is a tree that used to be common in the Florida region but its population suddenly started to decline. The passage presents three ways to save the Torreya tree with the aid of humankind. However, the lecturer argues that each of these plans has fundamental flaws, and casts doubt on them.

First, the passage suggests planting the tree in its original microclimate, located in northern Florida. It is mentioned that its humid and cold conditions have made the species thrive in the past. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She states that current climate changes in the region have affected said microclimate, and probably is now unsuitable for the Torreya tree. It is mentioned that these climate changes are caused either by global warming or local climate change. Regardless, this situation makes the plan unfeasible.

Second, the Author presents the idea of planting the trees further north, where the climate is more favorable to the tree. It is noted that probably the trees used to inhabit these northern regions, so humans would only be helping them to return. The lecturer challenges this point. She asserts that assisted migration could backfire. She elaborates on this by presenting an example in which the black locust trees had been relocated and quickly started displacing the local plant life, making the feat an environmental disaster.

Finally, the text posits that research centers are key to preserve the species. The author explains that labs could maintain the species and develop ways for their survival. The professor casts doubt on this assertion. She notes that in order for a species to survive, it needs to fulfill certain criteria: it must have a large population, and it needs genetic diversity. She argues that a lab could not have the capacity to hold a large population, and this would make the tree vulnerable for diseases.
