TPO-34 - Integrated Writing Task A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first Europeans to see

Both the reading and the lecturer talk about the extinction of the Steller sea cow, which was a very large marine animal that lived in the cost of Siberia. Although the cause of extinction is not entirely certain, The passage claims 3 theories of why these large animals probably cease to exist. However, the lecturer presents counter arguments for each of the passage theories, effectively casting doubt on them.
First, the author of the passage says that overhunting was the main cause of their extinction. He points out that the food was scarce in Siberia, thus leading its native to overhunt the animals throughout hundreds of years. The professor rebuts this argument. He explains that the animals in question were immense and only one of them was probably enough to feed the natives for a week. Furthermore, he adds that the population of natives in Siberia was small, making it unlikely for them to overhunt the Steller sea cow.

Second, the passage claims that disturbances in the ecosystem led these animals to disappear. It is mentioned that kelp, a type of sea plant that was their main source of food, was very susceptible to environmental changes. Moreover, the author suggests that an environmental disturbance probably took place. The lecturer casts doubt on this claim. Pointing out that if such environmental change took place, there would be more severe consequences documented. He argues that whales should also have been affected because they also feed off kelp.

Finally, the Author presents the theory that European fur traders played a major role in this animal's extinction. He says that these traders are known to have hunted the last sea cow in 1768 and is reasonable to think that their hunt severely affected the creature. The lecturer opposes this argument. He states that the fur hunters arrived when the sea cow's population was already small. He puts forth the idea that another factor should have played a role in the animal's disappearance.
