The reading and the lecture are both about the sea otter. Whereas, the author of the reading coins a statement that the decline in the population of otter is due to the pollution, the lecture suggest cast doubt on the statement by the author by proving the three defensive points which claims that the author of the reading saying are false.
First of all, the author of the reading posit that pollution is the only factor which cause the decrease in the number of the sea otter. For example, oil rigs and other substance of the industrial products which cause pollution has cause the death of the sea otter. However, the lecture disputes this point. He state that there is no sign of death sea otter in the sea which proves that it is cause by the pollution because he suppose that they were eaten by the predator.
Secondly, the author of the reading claims that there is also decrease in the other sea mammals such as seals, sea lions. The reason what has cause the number of sea otter to reduce also effect to the other sea mammals to decline. Nevertheless, the lecture refutes this argument. He argues that as the otter used to feed on whales and as the whales disappear the sea otter start to haunt the other sea mammals which cause the reduction in the number of those species.
Finally, the author of the reading suppose that the hypothesis of uneven patterns are outcomes as the result of pollution. He also states that in one place there is a decrease in the number of sea otter whereas on the other land there is stable number of sea otter which proves that the diminish of sea otter was due to the pollution. On the other hand, the lecture believe that the uneven pattern was caused by the predator. He also thinks that there is stable number of sea otter where the place is dark and rocky. So, he says that in those place there cannot sustain the predator thus there is no lessen in the population of sea otter.
In conclusion, according to the ongoing prediction and research the lecture conclude the fact that the decrease in the number of sea otter is cause by the predator not by the pollution.
