TPO-10 - Integrated Writing Task The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it c

In the given sets of materials, the main topic is whether predation or pollution caused the otter's population declined. While the author has focused on the explanation of how pollution could play a significant role on this trend, the speaker in the follow-up audio material cast doubt on those points by providing justifications.

The first point mentioned in the article is that due to industrial source of pollution near the coast, water samples have revealed the excessive amount of chemical substances which led to demise in otters. However, the speaker questioned this concept by stated that predation could be more logical to happen because of lack in clear evidence such as dead body in the beach.

Moreover, according to the essay, other population of the sea mammals decreased. Hence, environmental pollution had impact upon the whole ecosystem. Nonetheless, the lecturer has mentioned that when a vast major of whale hunted, other species like orca has changed its diet to survive. Therefore, the decline in others sea creature was axiomatic.

Last but not least, the writer stated that uneven pattern in otter population also could be explainable based on pollution hypothesis. Contamination along the sea area has made otter to spread erratically. Conversely, according to the lecture, some huge animals like orca were not able to access in shallow or rocky locations. So the population declined in these specific places.
