TPO 10 The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it caused much concern because sea otters play an important ecological role in the coastal ecosystem. Experts started investigating the cause of the decline and quickly realized that there were two possible explanations: environmental pollution or attacks by predators. Initially, the pollution hypothesis seemed the more likely of the two.
The reading and lecture are both about the decline of sea otter population. The author of the reading believes that sea otter has important role in the ecosystem. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that the arguments are inaccurate compared to facts.
First of all, the author points out that decline in sea otter in Alaskan coast was due to pollution from oil rigs and other chemicals. The article notes that upon examination of sea water they found out that it has increased levels of chemicals that cause infections and death to otters. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that pollution is weakened by the fact that no one can find any dead sea otter in Alaskan coast. Furthermore, she argues that if infection kills the otter then their bodies can be seen floating in the coast. In addition otter decline is consistent with predation theory, otter being killed by predators and is eaten immediately and cannot be washed in shore.
Secondly, the author contends that sea creatures such as seal and sea lions are also declining. The article establishes that Orca can be affected as well, but they eat on larger prey like whales. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that Orca prefer to eat on whale and whale disappear because of human hunters. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that sea otter changed their diet and started preying on Orca and it cause the decline of sea lion and seals.
Finally, the author states that the uneven distribution of Otter population was due to the pollution theory. The article denotes that in Alaskan area the otter species decline while in other areas they remain constant. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that Orca predation is more dominant that pollution theory. She puts forth the idea that location that is accessible to Orca can cause the decline of sea otters population. Also, Orca cannot go to shallow location and it is where some type of sea lion has no decline in population.
