sea otter population

The reading and the lecture are both about decreasing the population of sea otters. The author of the reading believes that environmental pollution is the main cause of decreasing in sea otter population. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks predators are most likely causes of this phenomenon.

First of all, the author points out that chemical sources of pollution were found on the Alaskan coast. It is mention that industrial chemical pollution increased the levels of dangerous substances in the water that could indirectly cause their deaths. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says the probability of infection by pollution is rare because no one finds dead sea otter in the beach. Furthermore, She explains her reason by saying that predator such as human hunt them.

Secondly, the author contends that other sea mammals were also declining which indicates the factor should be able to affects the entire ecosystem rather than single species. Therefore, the passage goes on to mention that the factor just can be water-pollution while the lecturer suggests small mammals will be hunt because of changing diets of big ones.

Eventually, the passage and lecture both discuss the uneven pattern of otter decline. The author of the reading states that uneven concentration of pollution is the reason; however, the speaker refutes it, she says predation theory is a better explanation.
