The reading article states that full length portrait of a teenage girl owned by a member of the Austen family has come up for sale and provides three reasons to believe that she is the subject of professional painting. However the professor explains that evidence linking which were not convincing and refutes each of the authors reasons.
First ,the reading claims that in 1882 several decades after Austen's death, Austen 's family gave permission to use the portrait as an illustration in an edition of her letters. The professor refutes this point by saying that Jane died almost 70 years ago and family members not seen themselves.
Second, the article posits that the face in the portrait clearly resembles the one in Cassandra's sketch. However the professor says that Austen's has many relatives and their extended family members were large . Jane Austen has many cousin and it could be one of her cousin's or niece who is a teenager.
The reading says that the painting is unsigned and undated there is evidence that it was painted when Austen was a teenager. The professor opposes this point by saying that date on a stamp of blank canvas indicates that was sold by William. William didn't sell this in London until Jane Austen was 27 years old. Looks like canvas were used when Jane Austen is older than a girl which is portrait in the painting.
