In the northwestern United states, forest fire and vigorous storm every year cause detrimental effect to the forest. According to the article, salvage logging helps to the economy and decrease the damage of the forest. In salvage, logging practice is clear the dead tree from the forest area and uses the wood lumber, plywood, and other wood products. Whereas, according to the lecture, salvage logging help to the recovering forest but the negative impact in long term.
Firstly, the passage claims that dead tree interrupt the growth of other trees and it takes a year for decomposing. Salvage logging provides the clear the area for new trees. In contrast, the lecturer mentions that clearing the area not guarantee to new tree growth. Decomposition of the tree gives the nutrition rich soil for future trees. If the remove the dead tree, so, lack of nutrition for the tree it cannot the survive.
Secondly, the author emphasizes that insect attracts the to decay wood such as spruce brak battle which is harm to other tree growth. Therefore, salvage logging helps to an eradication of the insect infestation and give healthy forest for trees. On the contrary, the speaker explains that spruce bark beetle lives in the more than 100 years in the forest but not any major damage to the forest trees. In fact, this insect prey for many birds. So, beneficial for both plants and insects.
Lastly, the passage implies that dead trees still usable for industries so, it can be the move by the worker of the local resident. Thus, help to both industrial and local people get the job. On the other hand, the professor states that large lumber wood take only by helicopter and it much expensive. The job is only temporary for local people. Besides, skilled people require than local people because of they are expert in a job.
