tpo 14 salvage logging

Essay topics

The passage discusses the benefits of salvage logging, which is removing damaged trees from the forest after a severe storm or a forest fire, on both to a damaged forest and the economy. The professor, on the other hand, casts doubts on long-term benefits, and she provides several reasons.

Firstly, the author states the decomposition time of dead trees, since so long, salvage logging could make room for new trees for fresh growth. However, the lecture explains that the absence of nutritions on the soil, because of removing dead trees whose decomposition increase the nutrient content there, would cause more severe results in long-term.

Secondly, the author makes an assertion on a large number of insect, such as spruce bark beetle, one of whose suitable habitat is decaying trees, can damage to live. Thus, by cleaning of rotting wood, minimization of the danger of insects can be achieved. Although the professor agrees that the insect population will increase in the area, she contradicts on the negative effect of this increment, and she claimes that a large number of insects have not given major damages to the forest. Additionally, since birds eat insects, forest ecosystem would benefit in the long term.

Thirdly, the passage points out the economical benefits of the salvage logging, since much wood is usable in the industry and since the additional job opportunities for local residents. In contrast, the professor draws attention to the expenses of vehicles that are used in the wood industries for cleaning, indeed, salvage logging would cost much more money to industry. Furthermore, salvage logging grand only a temporary advantage to the economy, also the training budget of local workers should be higher.
