Both the reading and the lecture mention the birds' population in the United State. Although the reading states three reasons of the decline of birds' population, the lecturer finds them unconvincing and provides three counter reasons to refute them all.
Firstly, the reading mentions that human population growth has caused destroying the birds' habitat. On the other hand, the lecturer explains that however it is true that their habitat has gone under several damages for some type of birds, some other types of birds such as pigeons take advantages of being in cities. Not only do these birds get used to these areas, but also haucks and other rare birds have migrated to the cities to feed on pigeons and swallows.
Secondly, the reading claims that by increasing the human population, the need for more food has resulted in cultivation of more lands for agricultural activities where have been the birds' habitat once. The lecturer, however, discusses that while this fact is true, it cannot be explained in the way the reading has stated. By introduction of new and innovative crops and methods, the need for more lands in the United States has been reduced significantly. Thus, it is unnecessary to destroy birds' habitat.
Eventually, the reading states that chemical pesticides used for agriculture have made the decline in the birds' population. In contrast, according to the lecture, this aspect of agricultural activities have been improved through two important ways. First, more innovative and less toxic pesticides have been produced recently. Moreover, the trend for pesticide-resistant crops have been popular and well-known in last decades. These two reasons have resulted to reduce the pesticides in the agricultural activities and increase birds' growth.
