TPO 26 integrated writing task
The reading and the lecture are both about the dominance of the zebra mussel invasion. The reading passage claims that the zebra mussels invasion cannot be stooped for three main reasons. As opposed to, the lecturer who counters-argues that viewpoint, trying to prove that these three reasons do not seem convincing.
First and foremost, the writer mentions that the spread of zebra mussels has been made possible by humans transportation through ships. Ships which traveled from Europe to The North America carried water that had mussles in it. Therefore, the water got mixed with existing water and that give mussles the opportunity to create new colonies in different locations. On contrary, the professor cannot disagree more, reasoning that it is true that mussels got spread by humans transportations but they could have stopped by changing the water. Instead of using regular water they could have refilled the cargo with ocean water. So, the mussels could have not survived because of the high salinity.
The second argument the author gives is that zebra mussles can quickly dominate the new habitat because they can survive in a variety of conditions. Consequently, they can spread and reproduce faster. However, the lecturer cannot be more outrages, explaining that they could have been spread in the beginning but after the birds have noticed their presence they may start to hunt for those. Therefore, the number is not going to be that high.
Lastly, on one hand the passage points out that mussels are likeky to decline in overall fish population because they eat plancton. So, the competition would be high between fish and zebra mussels. Nevertheless, the professor declares that that may be true but mussels help fish too by generating nutritions. For example, bottem fish benefit from the presence of mussels. Actually, their population is high in places where mussels are located.
In conclusion, although, the text suggests three reasons in supporting that the spread of zebra mussels is unstoppable, the lecturer believes that none of them is persuasive.
