TPO 39- Integrated Writing Task

The reading passage and the lecture are both about the theories of the mass extinction events at the end of the Triassic period. Whereas the author of reading states that they do not know exactly what happened that eliminated so many species in a short period, there are several possible explanations, the lecturer suggests that those explanations maybe plausible, but not the good ones.

The lecturer casts doubts on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.

First and foremost, according to the reading, the theory of the decline of sea levels could be one of the reasons of extinction of too many species. The destruction of coastal shallow-ocean would have had a profound effect. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He says that species can adapt in different environment gradually without the need to extinct completely. Therefore, the change must have been gradually. Furthermore, he mentions that the extinction occur when this changes are happening all of a sudden.

The second argument the author gives is that the massive climate cooling in the end of the Triassic period was marked by widespread volcanic activity which made possible the increase of the sulfur dioxide in atmosphere. As a result, a lot of species extinct.
Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes the argument. He argues that the presence of sulfur dioxide still exists in atmosphere, this does not mean that the excess of SO2 is a strong evidence for the extinction. Moreover, she adds that so2 plus water create rain, so all that excess could have been eliminated quickly.

Lastly, the reading claims that the theory of asteroid strike could be a reason of extinction. The massive depression could have created a big impact at the end of the Triassic period. In addition, asteroid may have blocked sunlight long enough for most plants to die. On the other hand, the lecturer thinks that the carter that they have found is dated 12 million years before the extinction. Therefore, this is not a persuasive reason.

In conclusion, although the reading and lecture are both about the theories of the extinction of species. The three points made in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.<br>
