The reading passage states three reasons that the invasion of zebra mussel is unstoppable, whereas the lecture points out that the spread of zebra mussel is able to control.
Firstly, the author insists that the fishes used to use ship to help them to spread. They attached themselves to ships' bottom or can survive in "ballast water", so the previous example shows that their invasion cannot be stopped. The professor, however, argues that the reason why their spread success before is that individuals at that time are deficient in knowledge and currently there is efficient way to stop the invasion. People use the fresh water in Europe to balance the cargo and then empty the water in North American waterway. Since the waterway is full of ocean water, the zebra mussel cannot survive.
Secondly, the reading says that the fishes will suit the environment quickly for they possess a high rate of reproduction and no natural predator, therefore, they will dominate their new habitats. In contrast, the speaker reckons that the birds in the fishes' habitat will regard them as new source of food. In this way, the birds will eat a large amount of zebra mussel and they are not able to dominate these regions.
Lastly, the reading states that the shellfishes are plankton eater which will compete food with others fish, as a result, the overall fish population will decrease significantly. On the contrary, the professor deems that it is true them may bring negative impacts, nevertheless, they can also have some positive impact to some fishes. Zebra mussel can generate nutrient which is conducive to bottom fish, thus bottom fish will thrive.
