TPO-28 - Integrated Writing Task Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him

The author of the reading believes that the claim of Robert E. Peary who stated that he reached the North Pole is believable and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that the proofs about his trip are not solid.
First of all, the reading mentions that the experts of the National Geographic Society approved his trip. They checked his records and instruments. However, the lecture counters this point by explaining that the committee of this experts were friends of Robert E. Peary. Furthermore, the examination of his tools was in couple days only. According to the professor, they might take sums of money, thus, their checking was not trustworthy.
Secondly, the article asserts that the speed of his journey could justify because another traveler did the same trip in the same short time. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that the conditions of this traveler were different. The weather was favorable and he had less weight since the supplies were thrown from a plan. On the other hand, Robert E.Peary did not have the suitable circumstances.
Thirdly, the writer says that the shadow in the pictures of Robert E. Peary approved his trip because of the sun position match the shadow calculation in these pictures. However, the lecturer posits this argument. She says the shadow in the photographs is not reliable. The pictures are old and they looked blurred. As a result, this evidence cannot be accurate.
