TPO 28- Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him into an international celebrity. Though some historians have expressed doubts that Peary did in fact reach the North Pole, three arguments provide strong support for the truth of Peary’s claim.
The reading and lecture are both about the expedition of Robert Peary to the North Pole. The author of the reading believes that Peary reached North pole with three theories of support. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented. The lecturer says that there are no solid evidence that Peary reached North Pole.
First of all, the author points out that National Geographic has conducted investigation to know if the expedition was accurate or not. The article notes that upon inspecting the records and tools used by Peary they concluded that his claims are accurate and concise. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that it is true that National geographic conducted investigation to know if Peary reached the North pole. Furthermore, she argues that the data and details obtained are not objective. In addition, the committee was close friends of Peary and they paid large amount of money to fund the trip of Peary. Also, they only examined the records of Peary's account for only two days and it was not enough to thoroughly examine his claims.
Secondly, the author contends that there are recent expedition telling that they reached North Pole in 37 days, the same with the claims of Peary. The article establishes that Tom Avery, made the same trek and dog sleds with Peary but only took him less that 37 days and this accounts denotes that Peary's account are true. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that the difficulties Avery and Peary had on their trip to North Pole are not the same. Moreover, he elaborates on this by mentioning that although they have the same sled as Peary has, but the weight and number of supplies they bring are not the same. For example Avery food was delivered to him by an airplane and his trip has more favorable terrains than Peary's.
Finally, the author states that the photographs taken in North Pole has evidence to support his expedition. The articles denotes that the shadow of the sun has the same position on the day the photograph was taken providing a strong evidence to support his accounts. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the photograph does not prove anything. He puts forth the idea that it has no precise method to calculate the shadow of the sun and did not know the exact position of the sun, thus, making Peary's claims inaccurate. In addition, the photograph is unfocused, faded and worn out. The shadow in the image is blurred and faded and it cannot accurately tell if it is taken in the North Pole.
