TPO-29 - Integrated Writing Task Large numbers of dinosaur fossils have been discovered in deposits on Alaska's North Slope, a region that today experiences an extremely cold, arctic climate. One hundred million years ago, when those dinosaurs were alive,

The reading passage states that the edmontosaur, the most common North Slope dinosaurs, lived in the inhospitable environment of the North Slope and made it possible by migrating south to more temperate regions, and provides three reasons to support the claim. The professor, meanwhile, casts serious doubts on this idea and believes that none of these reasons are convincing enough and refutes all the author's reasons.
First, the lecturer asserts that the climate of the North Slope was warmer in the past and the condition was good enough for the vegetation to grow efficiently. She adds that in the winter dead nutritious plant can contribute to dinosaurs to survive the harsh weather. However, the reading passage claims that the diet of the edmontosaur can support the migration hypothesis because as no plants were growing during the cold winter, they must have migrated to find more temperate zone for feeding themselves.
Second, the reading passage declares that as edmontosaur skeletons have been discovered in the same place, they might have lived and migrated in herds like many modern-day migratory animals, while the professor makes the argument that this claim is problematic. She comments that they could use this method to protect themselves from the potential predators rather than migration. Moreover, there is a modem instance for this claim that Elks lives in a herd in the aim of protection, not migration.
Third, although the passage posits that edmontosaur were physically capable of migrating long distance because they have the ability to run swiftly, the lecturer thinks that this was only right about the adult edmontosaurs, not juveniles. As a matter of fact, as young edmontosaurs cannot move very fast, adult edmontosaurs had to stay around them in the cold North Slope.
