TPO-30 - Integrated Writing Task A little over 2,200 years ago, the Roman navy attacked the Greek port city of Syracuse. According to some ancient historians, the Greeks defended themselves with an ingenious weapon called a "burning mirror": a polished co

The lecture disproves what is mentioned in the reading material. According to the passage, the burning mirror story is questioned by several reasons. The professor talks about the same issue. However, she thinks that the story of burning mirror is not a myth, but possible. Then she represents some evidences to demonstrate her statement.

For one thing, while the passage mentions that ancient Greek is not able to build a large mirror that have a precise parabolic curvature, the professor rebuts this by saying that this problem can be solved by using tons of small mirrors. Because the ancient Greek can use many small mirror to create a huge mirror that is parabolic.

Moreover, contrary to the statement in the reading that it will take a long time before making a fire, the professor insists that this experiment does not explain every possibility because it is based on wood. Another material used on the ship is pitch. Pitch can catch fire easily within seconds, and fire can spread everywhere then.

Finally, the professor asserts that burning mirror is actually more effective way to defend enemy, while the passage says that the ancient Greek can use flaming arrows instead. Flaming arrows are notable, so the soldiers on the ship can put the fire in advance, while the burning mirror can set a fire in unobservable place on the ship, which is surprising. So the burning mirror is more effective than flaming arrows.
