The author of the reading passage and the lecturor discuss whether the pattern of the fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones is the evidence that Sinosauropteryx had feathers. The author expresses that the lines cannot indicate the presence of feathers. However, the lecturor casts doubts on the author's opinion and refutes each of the author's theories by providing several counter-arguments.
Firstly, the author claims that the fine lines are the structures that formed after dinosaurs' death. Nonetheless, the lecturor mentions that the structures were nor decomposition substances in fossils. For the reason that the structures of the dinosaurs were well-preserved. So, they were feathers, not the fibers caused by decomposition after dinosaurs' death. Therefore, the lecturor states that the structures can be representation of the feathers because they were well-preserved.
Secondly, the author points out that the lines surrounding the skeleton are remains of frills, not feathers. Nevertheless, the lecturor declares that there is chemical difference between feather and frill. Feathers consist of a certain protein, and frills does not composed of this protein. And in the fossil, the certain protein is found in the structures. So it is obvious that the lines surrounding the skeleton can be indicator of feathers. As a result, the lecturors believes that the chemical shows the fact that the lines surrounding the skeleton are feathers.
Finally, the author suggests that the lines surrounding the structures made structures useless for flught and thermoregulation. By contrast, the lecturor states that they can be of other use. For example, the peacock uses their feathers to attract mate. Besides, the fossil reveals that the structures are colorful, which is orange and white, so the feathers are use for display. Thus, the lecturor describes that the feathers are used to display.
