The reading specifies that there are numerous theory explain carved stone balls as a strange type of artifact. The professor, however, finds the theories not convincing and provides some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the author states that the carved stone ball used as a weapons in hunting or fighting. Moreover, some of the balls have a hole in them and many have grooves on the surface and it is possible people make this hole to swing the stone around or throw it. Nevertheless, the speaker opposes the idea reasoning that there are not documents shows stone used for hunting . If the ancient people use it for hunting or fighting, Archaeologists could find crack or broken part in stone but the surface of stone are well-preserved. Consequently, carved stone were not use by the ancient people for hunting or fighting.
Second, based on the reading, the stone balls have a uniform size (70 mm in diameter) and it is plausible that the carved stone balls were used as a primitive system of weights to measure quantities of grain or other food. Conversely, the lecturer asserts that the mass of carved stone balls were not the same since their texture and density differ from each others and it could not be use for measurement.
Third, according to the reading, the carved stone balls have complex and elaborate designs and it served a social purpose for their owner. In contrast, mark of many carved stone balls are extremely simple and also archaeologists did not find them in a grave. Hence, it is unlikely this odd round shape stone had a important social status.
