Carved stone balls found at a different locations of Scotland are the artifacts whose possible purposes and meanings have been discussed in the reading. Historians provided three theories to identify the purpose of the balls. Whereas, lecturer is not convincing with these theories and casts doubts with her opinions.
Firstly, reading states that carved stone balls could be used as weapons because they have holes and grooves so that cord could pass through holes. Contrary to this opinion, lecture states that stone balls are unlikely to be used as weapons because arrow heads and hand axis must had sign of wear which were used for hunting and fighting purposes. Stones would have some cracks to show as a sign but these balls are not damaged and even they were kept well preserved.
Secondly, reading claims that balls were used as primitive weight measures because all balls are in uniform size and 70 mm in diameters. While, lecture states that stones balls are made up of different types of materials like sand, quartz which have difference in density. This difference in density leads to difference in weight if they are of uniform size which shows that they were not used as weight measures.
Thirdly, reading states that carved stone balls with carved design resemblance as a symbol of social status. Whereas, lecture casts doubt on this opinion and states that there are inconsistent facts which shows balls were unlikely to be used as a social symbol. High ranked people buried with their possessions in the Neolithic period but carved balls were not found in the grave of any high ranked personality which resembles that balls were not used for social purpose.
