The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about extinction of the Steller's sea cow. Considering this, the author offers three main reasons of the sea cow' extinction. The professor, on the other hand, not only refutes the author's assessments, but also asserts that the announced option runs counter to the way the reading just discussed. The lecturer demonstrates three reasons to reject the points in the passage.
The first criticism of the passage against which the reading argues is that the sea cow may have become extinct, due to the fact that they were overhunted by the native Siberian people. As stated by the professor, the sea cows were massive creatures, and a couple of them could feed Siberian villages for months. In addition, population of native Siberian people was not large. Therefore, native Siberian people did not have to hunt a lot of the sea cow. So, it is a fallacious conclusion to consider overhunting of the sea cow as a reason of their extinction.
Moreover, unlike the reading which claims that the ecosystems disturbances, which led to reduction of the sea cow's food resource, contributed to extinction of the sea cow, the professor illustrates that if ecosystems had occurred before 1768, it should create some changes in other marine animals like whale; however, fishing ships did not report anything regarding decline of the other marine animals, which indicates that kelp population was decreased. So, since we do not have any evidence to support the view that the sea cow have become extinct, thanks to ecosystems disturbances, ecosystems disturbances were not the reason of the sea cow extinction.
Finally, the lecture contradicts the fallacy of the passage that European fur traders were the main cause of the sea cow extinction, saying that it is true that the sea cow became extinct soon after the arrival of European traders, but by the time that European traders arrived the island, the population of the sea cow was already quite small, the decrease in population of the sea cow had occurred before 1768. As a result, there is another reason for the extinction of the sea cow.
All in all, the professor maintains that the arguments mentioned in the passage are not convincing.
