TPO 34- A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first European to see one. In 1768 the animal became extinct. The reasons for the extinction are not clear. Here are three theories about the main cause of the extinction.
The reading passage and the lecture both discuss the disaster that happend and many see cows exticted during the time. In the reading part, the author mentions that there were several reasons and discribed tree mains of them. In the listening part, however, the speaker challenges what the author states and refutes the reasons.
To behin with, as mentioned in the article, the writer sets forth that there were extinxted, resulting in over hunted by native people, which they were a good sorce for foods; nevertheless, the speaker rebutes the reasons asserting that sea cows had huge massive wei, sometimes over the ten tones, therefore, they could beer the vilage and there is no reason for them to hinted many of them to be extinction.
Secondly, the author points out that its main sorce foods were declined by ecological changes on that time. Nonetheless, the speaker flatly contradicts the rasons and cintends that echological changes would affected on many species not only the cow seas animals, but also others like fishes. there were growing the fishes on that time, in hence does not lack of food storage.
Finally, the author claims that it might have been happent because of the advent of uropians and for fur tradors. they had weapons that took lots of them. IN contrasts the professor is off the opinion that before uropian arrived on the Sibery there were almost near extinction. they were quit small and were not largest on that time and it has other reasons that do not realete to the uropians and their weaponens.
